Lufthansa Technik recently announced its collaboration with Mercedes-Benz Style in developing a design for VIP cabins for short and medium–haul aircrafts. The concept was presented at the European Business Aviation Convention and Exhibition (EBACE) 2015 in Geneva, Switzerland which ran from the 19th – 21st of May.
Traditionally, private jets are luxurious anyway but you still get the feeling that you’re on an aircraft due to the segmentation and linear layout of many typical private jets. The new concept by Lufthansa Technik and Mercedes-Benz Style however, sets new standards through its ‘dynamic, spiral architecture.’ With this new structure, spaces are independent of each other and do not adhere to how walls and seats are characteristically arranged in a private jet cabin. It also integrates Mercedes’ trademark theme of contrasting materials, colours and lighting.
Vice President of Design Daimler AG, Gorden Wagener said of the collaborative process, “It was an inspiring challenge to transfer our design philosophy of sensual purity into the area of aeronautical engineering. The spectacular architecture of the interior shows creativity and modernity. Sensual surfaces and clear forms, combined with intelligent high-tech features and perfectly shaped modern luxury are the characteristic features of Mercedez-Benz design.”
The interior design is described as ‘organic and homogenous’ and likened to a DNA helix, with elements of ceiling, wall and flow seemingly merging into one another. The cabins, which will be made specifically for Airbus 320 and Boeing 737 range, will be decked out with furniture that have a sensuous feel and blends harmoniously with the interior.
The cabin windows will be concealed within black panels reminiscent of those in the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The Mercedes-Benz Magic Sky technology will also be adopted so that panels can be dimmed from black to transparent. Similar innovations will ensure displays and touch screens are seamlessly integrated into the panels without interrupting the style.
The designs also feature stunning hardwood floors and plush leather seating areas, including fully reclining chairs. Sleek black and white accents complete the design, which also incorporate luxurious wraparound sofas and a two-person bed. Touchscreen technology will play a key role in the future of luxury aviation, with windowpanes doubling as infotainment controls. Soothing, glowing blue aquariums add another superfluous touch to the design concept.
Upholding their side of the partnership, Lufthansa Technik will provide the expertise in customising design in both the VIP and VVIP aircrafts as well as specific requirements of aircraft cabins.
Although currently only at the conceptual stage in its development, Mercedes-Benz Style and Lufthansa Technik plan to target this innovative state-of-the-art luxury product at a private global clientele with a strong affinity for unique design.
