Bangkok is one of the most popular business destinations in Asia. It is home to the Stock Exchange of Thailand which lists more than 400 companies across a vast number of industries. Such industries include technology, electronics, advertising and marketing with tourism being one of its largest income generators. But once business has been done for the day, Bangkok offers an endless list of after-hours pursuits which include world-class dining, shopping, bars, massages and so much more.
If it’s your first time visiting this exciting city on business, here are some essential tips to remember that will help you enjoy its rich culture and traditions:
What to Pack
The Thai people are very status conscious so despite the heat and relaxed atmosphere in Bangkok, pack your suitcase with clothes that will impress. If you’re expecting to woo a new partner or close a deal, you need to look the part. For men, essentials would be jackets, long-sleeved shirts and ties and for women conservative skirts, blouses and jackets are a must. It is acceptable to take your jacket off and carry it so don’t worry, you won’t roast in your clothes throughout the day.
Good to Know Before You Go
It’s handy to know a few things about Bangkok before you depart. Firstly, if the Thai language is unfamiliar to you, then you’re in luck because English is spoken quite widely throughout the city. Secondly, you don’t need to worry about visas as visitors from most countries receive a visa on arrival that is valid for 30 days. And thirdly, the currency is Thai Baht but major credit cards are accepted in most leading hotels, department stores and shops. ATM machines also accept most major credit cards.
Aside from the logistics of arriving in a foreign country for the first time, it’s also imperative to know about cultural traditions. The two crucial ones in Thailand are the Royal Family and the Buddhist Religion. If your business itinerary includes visiting the Grand Palace or any places of worship remember to never show disrespect for any member of the Royal Family and treat Buddha statues and images with the utmost respect. Remove shoes before entering temples and remember women never touch Buddhist monks or hand anything directly to them.
Transport
From the Airport
Situated 18 miles east of the city centre is Suvarnabhumi International Airport, which is usually the airport you’ll fly into. From here you have a couple of options to get you into the city in the most comfortable and timely way. A cab will take between 30 minutes to an hour (depending on traffic and where your hotel is located) to reach downtown via the expressway which links the airport and the city centre. You can also take the Airport City Link which can get you into the city within 15-30 minutes depending on which train you take.
Avoid getting in a taxi that doesn’t have a meter, or has one but doesn’t have it on as you will most likely get ripped off. We wouldn’t recommend renting a car either as traffic can get heavy and difficult to navigate especially if you’re on a schedule. Stick to the options stated above and you’ll soon be on your way with minimum hitches.
In The City
Once you’re in the city, the SkyTrain is the way to go. You can zip between meetings and make good time between your hotel and dinner reservations. If you do have a bit of time though and want to experience something of the local way of getting around, you could try the riverboats and longtail boats which are great for touring. One thing you’ll see everywhere, and which Bangkok is famous for, are tuk tuks. But we suggest using them as a novelty ride as they’re often slow and leave you open to the surrounding air pollution from the dense traffic.
We hope you enjoy your first business trip to Bangkok – a riverside city once known for its tuks tuks and street food which has now evolved into a modern Asian commercial hub. Get in touch with our SkyClub experts who know exactly how to best get you there.
