One of the biggest pet peeves for most travellers is flight delays and cancellations, and with good reason. No-one likes being stuck waiting around in the airport, gazing at the departure board unsure of boarding times. So what if you could know which airlines are most efficient and best at keeping things on time?
Airline Punctuality Rankings
Recently UK-based data company OAG published their OAG Punctuality League for 2015 – the industry’s most comprehensive annual ranking of on-time performance for the world’s airlines and airports. Within the report, OAG ranks the Top 20 Airlines in terms of punctuality, revealing that the average on-time performance for arriving flights is 88.9% – a slight increase from 88.8% in 2014.
airBaltic comes top of the table for a second year running, making it the world’s most punctual airline. Eight new airlines make it into the top 20, including Qatar Airways, which has improved its on-time performance, and several Latin American airlines, which have been included due to improved coverage in the region.
In general, mainline carriers performed better in 2015 than low-cost carriers. Only two budget airlines – Azul and Norwegian – make an appearance in the top 20 airlines, whereas in 2014, Norwegian, easyJet and Thai AirAsia made it onto the list. OAG says that undoubtedly the high utilisation of aircraft with low- cost carriers has an impact on scheduling, meaning they have to be able to offer a quick turnaround.
