Just when you thought flying couldn’t get any better, along comes an aircraft that pushes the boundaries. An aircraft that’s not only profitable numbers-wise, but sets a new standard of efficiency and passenger comfort whilst addressing environmental concerns. Welcome to the next generation of air travel.
The A350 XWB is Airbus’ newest family of wide-body aircraft that uses 25 per cent lower fuel consumption than its competitors. The airframe is made from advanced composite materials which are corrosion and fatigue free, resulting in easier maintenance.
This means that there are more technological advancement including spacious seats, views from panoramic windows and a wider cabin that you can really appreciate.
Take a look at the other benefits you can look forward to as we discover who flies the A350:
Qatar Airways
Qatar Airways was the global launch customer of the A350 XWB, flying it from Doha to Frankfurt in January 2015. You know you’re in for a treat the moment you step on board and are welcomed by a striking interior feature in the form of a large illuminated ceiling dome.
Flat beds in a reverse-herringbone style unique to the carrier are very spacious – an aspect that can be attributed to the wide-body design of the A350. The seat controls are ergonomically situated no matter what position you’re in. It has five pre-sets to choose from but if these pre-sets don’t hit the spot, why not create your own for the ultimate comfort. The arm rests are also motorized whilst the built-in seat massager completes the in-seat experience.
A standout feature of the business class cabin are the windows which can be dimmed with push button controls. There are two panels to each window: one blacks it out while the other softens the light like a shade. Even in direct sunlight, the blackout shades block out all the light from the aircraft’s exterior – great for those who want to maximise their sleep.
Finnair
Finnair is the first European airline to fly the Airbus A350. A lot of thought has been placed into the design of the remarkably bright Business Class cabin, being created by Finnish design house dSign Vertti Kivi & Co. Calming white and grey are the dominant colours with subtle blue accents which reflects the fresh style of its Nordic roots.
The Zodiac Cirrus III seats are very spacious and recline to a flat-bed that’s just over two metres long. These are arranged in a herringbone layout that offers such great privacy that even if you’re travelling solo and are in a middle seat, you’ll still barely see your neighbour (if that’s your preference).
A noteworthy element is the dynamic LED mood lighting that can be changed according to the time of day, destination or even season, to create a relaxing flight experience. So if you’re travelling to an Asian destination, a warm orange glow might be created to set the ambience or cool Nordic blue shades that mimic the northern lights will set the atmosphere as you approach Helsinki – now that’s enlightening!
Singapore Airlines
Being the first A380 customer, Singapore Airlines is never one to be left behind. It joined the exclusive A350 club in March this year and is so far the biggest customer for the next-generation aircraft.
On board, you can immediately appreciate the spaciousness of the aircraft which is facilitated by the high flat ceiling line. And once in the air, the plane is very quiet, allowing for a very relaxing flight which you can feel the benefits of once you’re back on the ground.
In a world first, Singapore Airlines’ A350 features new technology brought to life by Panasonic Avionics. A companion app enables you to review the inflight entertainment video and audio content that will be available on your flight, create pre-selected favourites lists and control the seat-back entertainment system – all of this using your personal electronic device. The app is available on iOS and android tablets and mobile phones.
This means your personal device can be used as a remote control to pause, play or skip through media content, allowing you to ‘multitask’. You can even access real-time information on the flight progress and flight path without interrupting your movie viewing. Singapore Airlines sure know how to stay ahead of the curve.
