Tipped as one of 2016’s hottest business travel destinations, lots of people are expected to flock to Singapore on business this year, so what is there to do? A whole host of things, if you know the right places to look. Boasting a vibrant gourmet scene, world-class attractions and sprawling shopping malls, there’s plenty to keep you occupied once meetings are out of the way.
Here’s our guide on where to stay, eat and play on your next business trip in The Lion City:
Where to Stay
Singapore is brimming with modern skyscrapers and hotels of all ratings, so there are plenty of options whatever your budget. If you’re travelling on business it’s likely you’ll be visiting the Central Business District, so if it’s a central location you’re looking for, we would suggest Swissotel’s The Stamford, Singapore’s leading business hotel. With reliable Internet access, comprehensive business services at the Swiss Executive Club, and access to the 70,000 square foot Raffles City Convention Centre, you’ll find it easy to get work done away from home.
If relaxation is more your thing, we recommend the the Marina Bay Sands, which is known for its famous rooftop infinity pool and stunning views. Alternatively if you’d like to be located close to Orchard Road – Singapore’s main shopping street – the Shangri La hotel is another great option for 5-star luxury; its Valley Wing was the choice for Barack Obama when he visited Singapore, so it’s definitely up to scratch.
Where to Dine
If you’re staying at the Marina Bay Sands there are lots of great dining options. Adrift by David Myers offers unique cocktails and Japanese-inspired bites, while Ce La Vie offers modern, Asian rooftop dining with spectacular views. Meanwhile JAAN, located on the 70th floor of The Stamford, serves up artisanal French cuisine by talented French chef Julien Royer, and was ranked as one of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants for 2016.
If it’s traditional cuisine that you’re after, visit one of the many hawker centres, which are filled with street stalls serving a mix of dishes from different ethnic groups, from Malay, Chinese and Indonesian, to Indian and Peranakan. Check out our ultimate Singapore food guide for more details.
Getting There & Around
Fly there in style with Singapore Airlines, the national flag carrier of Singapore. As one of the most luxurious airlines in the skies, this carrier offers a top notch experience for both First and Business Class customers. Make sure you take advantage of their ‘Book the Cook’ service, which allows you to select from a wide range of gourmet meals before you fly, including lamb shank and lobster thermidor for those with discerning tastes. Singapore Airlines also provides a limousine service, so you’ll be whisked from the airport to your hotel in no time.
Once there, getting around is easy. We find Uber the most convenient method of travel, since the app is linked straight to your bank account and you’re able to track exactly where your Uber is on the map. Local taxis are also inexpensive and usually have card machines, plus they are easy to hail outside any shopping mall or hotel.
What to see and do
Once business is done for the day, it’s time to explore Singapore and all it has to offer. If you want to hit the beach and enjoy the sunshine, head over to Sentosa. With a 2km stretch of golden sand and world-class attractions, including hotels, restaurants, a golf course and theme park, can you afford to miss out?
Another fantastic attraction is Gardens by the Bay, which makes you feel a little bit like you’ve entered Jurassic Park. With 101 hectares of garden that includes towering infusions of modern design mixed with a large variety of plants from all around the world, accompanied by awe-inspiring indoor garden displays, this topiary showcases a gardening twist that’s not to be missed.
