In May 2014, SAS announced a brand new Business Class seat for its long-haul flights, with direct aisle access and a fully horizontal sleeping position. SAS started rolling out its new Business Class cabins on 17 February 2015 and will gradually upgrade its fleet at the rate of one aircraft per month, except in the months of June-August.
Flight SK909 was the first flight to feature the new look, when the A330 ‘Erik Viking’ took off from Copenhagen bound for Newark. The next updated aircraft will enter service in late March, mainly flying between Stockholm/Oslo and the USA. Meanwhile the first of its four brand new A330 Enhanced aircraft will be ready in the fall.
The Cabin
Designed by UK based agency FactoryDesign, the Business Class cabin design has a smart, sophisticated look, with dark charcoal colours and light blue accents. The materials and color scheme in the new cabins have been chosen to create a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere, with lots of durable fabrics as opposed to leathers or other luxe finishings. The Thomson XL Vantage seats are configured in a 1-2-1 configuration, which means you’ll have direct aisle access no matter where you’re sitting. They’re also staggered in a zigzag pattern to maximise space in the cabin.
Since the seats are larger and take up more space than the previous Business Class, the Airbus A330 will have 32 seats instead of 34, while the A340 will have 40 instead of 46.
The Seats
Each seat measures 23”-24” wide between the armrests and reclines to become a fully flat bed measuring 77” long so you have plenty of space to relax or work. The blankets, pillows and mattresses are supplied by Hästens, the oldest bed manufacturer in Sweden, so you can expect to get a decent sleep throughout the journey.
What’s rather unique about these seats is that they are moldable, so you can inflate or deflate your seat depending on how hard or soft you would like it. There’s also a massage function and mood lighting to ensure you have the most comfortable experience possible.
Inflight Entertainment
The size of the screen on the inflight entertainment system is being increased from 10.4 inches to 15.4 inches and will be high definition, so you’ll get an all round better viewing experience.
Connectivity
There are individual power and USB ports for charging laptops, mobile phones and electronics, plus there’s Wi-Fi so you can stay connected and send emails while in the air. From the autumn, you’ll be able to make calls and use your mobile phone inflight thanks to a GSM connection and just like on the ground you’ll be charged international roaming rates by your mobile operator.
Dining
When flying in SAS Business on intercontinental flights, you are treated to a glass of champagne and will be served a three course menu, with a choice of three different main meals. A variety of fine wines, non-alcoholic drinks, fruit and snacks are also available throughout the flight.
